Sheila,
What a beautiful essay – you write about the indignities of a serious health issue (at any age!) with clarity and grace and good humor. Thanks for a lovely article that – while devoid of sentimentality – touched me greatly.
I just read your essay (and I have read your daughter’s work many times over the years). So much of your essay struck me, partially because my mother in law became blind as an adult, so I spend more time (probably) thinking about vision impairment than someone who does not have a visually impaired family member.
Thank you for sharing your experience so eloquently with us.
What a great column, Shiela. It captures the perspective so often missing from medical writings: that of the patient. Also, I am impressed with your understanding of the different kinds of macular degeneration, their methods of diagnosis and treatment. Never too late to consider medicine as your next career.
That’s how I “discovered” you. I look forward to reading your blogs and learning from a gifted writer!
